Guiding Questions: Psalms 61

This is part of the Tanakh Yomi Project.

  1. The introduction refers to “instrumental music”. Would this imply that only some Psalms had musical accompaniment?
  2. In what social “class” is the individual who asks for concern and aid from Divinity in Psalms 61:2-4? (Reference to Psalms 61:7-8 may be instructive)
  3. Psalms 61:3 speaks of “the end of the earth”. Is this a poetic reference? Is it a geographic reference?
  4. And, in the same verse, what is the “rock that is high above me” and does this imply being saved by being removed from “accessible attack”?
  5. In Psalms 61:5 what is meant by dwelling “in Your tent forever” — and does this “forever” have any implication as to immortality or, rather, “as long as I may live”?
  6. If in Psalms 61:7 it is the king who is uttering this Psalm, why is the “third person” rather than the first person utilized?
  7. Does the Psalm end on an optimistic note?
