Guiding Questions: Genesis 10

This is part of the Tanakh Yomi Project.

  1. In the description of the descendants of Noah (in this chapter), is any geographic area mentioned save for the Middle East (the Fertile Crescent) and some Mediterranean points? Why? Why not?
  2. If the genealogical sequence is by oldest first, which of the three sons (groups of peoples) was the youngest? (but see Genesis 10:21)
  3. Other than Nimrod, is any individual singled out for special description?
  4. Do Genesis 10:11 and Genesis 10:22 contradict one another re: Assyria?
  5. What is meant (Genesis 10:25) by “in his days the earth was divided”?
  6. Are any of the nations “value judged” or, simply, listed?
  7. Is Divinity mentioned in this chapter re: the distribution of peoples or did it “just happen”?
