Guiding Questions: Jeremiah 16

This is part of the Tanakh Yomi Project.

  1. Why is the prophet instructed not to marry and not to have children “in this place”?
  2. The prophet is further instructed not to mourn for what is to become of Judea. Why (Jeremiah 16:5)?
  3. Will all joy, then, be removed (Jeremiah 16:9)?
  4. What will the response of the people be when the prophet shares this message with them (Jeremiah 16:10)?
  5. And how will the prophet respond (Jeremiah 16:11-12)?
  6. Does the future hold any promise (Jeremiah 16:14-15) and why will one no longer refer to “God who took us out of Egypt”?
  7. But, will this pleasant prediction come quickly or is there to be a purification first (Jeremiah 16:16-18)? And, then?
  8. Do Jeremiah 16:19-21 constitute a promise? A threat? Neither?
