Guiding Questions: Ezekiel 40

This is part of the Tanakh Yomi Project.

  1. What city was destroyed in the twenty-fifth year after the (first) exile to Babylonia and why is the date so specifically stated in this instance?
  2. Where is the prophet transported in his vision (Ezekiel 40:2) and what phrase indicates that, indeed, it was a vision?
  3. Why was the prophet (in his vision) brought to Eretz Yisrael (Ezekiel 40:4)?
  4. What is the symbolism of the measuring rod (Ezekiel 40:5 through the balance of the chapter)?
  5. What are the specifics which are set forth in verse after verse and what building/courtyard/complex of buildings is (are) described?
  6. Does the description include the building itself or, as well, its furnishing (as, for example, Ezekiel 40:41 et. seq.)?
  7. According to Ezekiel 40:46, of what family were Kohanim descended?
  8. Does the specificity in this chapter (there will be more to follow) indicate a familiarity on the part of Ezekiel with the Bet Hamikdash and its surroundings?
  9. And why, presumably, would the prophet give such detail in his description of the Mikdash?
